Rapala or Temple

Let’s just face it. Ours is not a particularly affordable passion, even if you don’t have a boat. This is compounded by the fact that, unfortunately, a lot of fishing tackle is somewhat disposable. Terminal tackle gets lost on snags by the boatload, hooks get dull and bent and need to be replaced, and even lures get snagged from time to time. If you’re lucky, you’ll never break a rod, but otherwise, you get the picture. Costs add up. (And, by the way, we all know that boat stands for “break out another thousand.” But that’s neither here nor there.)

All of this being said, one of the best ways to stock up on fishing tackle without breaking the bank is by shopping seasonal deals, specifically Black Friday fishing deals, which is where, if you know where to shop, you will get the best prices of the year on the tackle you use most throughout it. And since hooks, line, and slow pitch fishing jigs don’t expire, it doesn’t really matter what time of the year you buy them, so you might as well get the best price.

Black Friday fishing deals are often the way to do just that. Here’s what you should know and how to score the best prices.

Why Shop Fishing Deals on Black Friday?

Before we give you direct advice on what you should specifically be shopping for when Black Friday rolls around, let’s talk about why this is the best time of year to shop these deals.

  • Black Friday is often when sporting goods retailers slash their prices most aggressively, which will often mean you get the best prices on the tackle you’ll be needing throughout the rest of the year.
  • Retailers often don’t offer good deals on in-demand tackle and equipment except on Black Friday.
  • Retailers are often sitting on a lot of stock from the year before, so while there are often limited quantities on some orders, it can often still be a good time to stock up.
  • While there are seasons that are open in the winter (cod and tog anglers, anyone?) most recreational seasons are in the summer, which means at the very least you should have some downtime to shop on Black Friday.

These are just some of the best reasons. Now let’s take a closer look at what you should stock up on.

Best Black Friday Fishing Deals

Wonder which are the best Black Friday fishing deals? We have you covered.

  • Rods and reels. Fishing rods, reels, and outfits are by far the biggest ticket items on here and, unless you have a boat, rods and reels are usually the single most expensive pieces of equipment in the arsenal of an angler’s tackle. A good combo could cost more than $1,000 (though there are more affordable ones, too). Plus, top brands like Daiwa, Shimano, and particularly Accurate Reels are known for their aggressive pricing. This makes Black Friday fishing deals on rods and reels some of the best of the year. And, considering that if you buy quality out of the gate and care for it, it’ll last for many seasons, so in many ways it makes the most sense to save as much as you can on tackle like this.
  • Saltwater lures. Saltwater lures, especially good ones from Rapala or NLBN, are not cheap, and, try as you might, you will lose some from time to time. After all, you’re not fishing if you don’t periodically lose a lure. Plus, soft baits like NLBN lures will only last through so many caught fish, anyway. This makes fishing deals on Black Friday that much more appealing, since you can stock up on dozens if not hundreds of saltwater lures before next season. Remember, again, they won’t go bad. Get as many as you reasonably get and stuff your tackle bags to the gills. Come summer (or even next year) you will be glad you did.
  • Fishing tools. Fishing tools, like fishing rods and reels, will last a long time if you care for them properly. This applies not just to tools like fish grippers and split ring pliers, but tools like scales. Stock up on deals and you’ll be better prepared come summer. Also, fishing tools like split ring pliers and similar tools make great gifts, so if you have another angler in your life, you might be able to score a gift or even a stocking stuffer on Black Friday fishing deals. Your secret for saving money on your Christmas list is safe with us.
  • Terminal tackle. All things being equal, terminal tackle is probably the best class of Black Friday fishing deals, after rods and reels. This is because terminal tackle (excluding lures themselves) is some of the most disposable stuff on the boat. Line doesn’t last forever, leaders need to be replaced. Swivels corrode, weights get lost when line gets snagged, and hooks get dull, bent, and otherwise need to be replaced. You often won’t save as much on these Black Friday fishing deals, but you may still be able to save a few pennies and in this capacity, buying in bulk is the way to go.
  • Swag. Lastly, if you’re looking to represent your favorite brands or have a fisherman in your life that is a fan of Rapala or Temple Reef or Johnny Jigs (or any other brand) you can often get hats and hoodies and other similar clothing items and accessories for a really good deal on Black Friday. Some companies may even give these away as promotional items. They also make good stocking stuffers for fishermen, just like fishing tools.
